Imperial Cities

8 day / 7 nights tour - Itinerary

Day 1 •

Welcome to Marrakech and Morocco!

Your guide will meet you at the airport and take you to the hotel, where you can settle in.

Rest of your day would be free in Marrakech. Perhaps you can visit the Jamna El Fnaa which is the hub of the old medina or medieval part of the city. At night time the square is lit up with food stalls, street entertainers and story tellers. Alternatively you can take a wander in the new town of Gueliz, along the rose gardens of the Mohamed VI Boulevard, or amongst the upmarket cafes in the Hivernage next to the medina.

Night in Riad Imilchil, Marrakech or similar.

Day 2 •

After breakfast a morning guided tour of Marrakech - with a chance to see the different souks, madrassa and palaces of the old city. The souks tend to be divided into areas selling the same things, so making it easier to haggle! There are the gold and silver souks, magic souks, spice souks and iron-mongers souks, in fact you can just about buy anything somewhere. Start by buying some dried fruit at the entrance to the souks to nibble on while walking…

Outside the souks the medina has beautiful Islamic and Berber architecture in the Bahia palace and the madrassas. We recommend a visit to the tanneries if you have time.

In the afternoon perhaps you could visit the Jardins Majorelle, a vibrant oasis of plants and pools near the medina. A 12 acre botanic garden designed in the 1920’s by the French painter, Majorelle has many different plants including a bamboo and cactus garden which is set off by the bright colours and the water features and pools.

Overnight in your Marrakech hotel.

Optional extra:- for those interested in Moroccan cuisine - we can offer a one day cookery course – start by meeting up in the souks at 10am to buy your ingredients and then go back to the kitchens for a lesson on how to prepare a traditional Moroccan dish or two which you can then try out for dinner! (extra charge)

Day 3 •
Marrakech – Casablanca - Rabat

After breakfast travel to the city of Casablanca, passing the small hills to the north of Marrakech and crossing the ever increasingly green fields to the coast.

While most of Casablanca has been rebuilt as the business centre of the country, there is still a small medina, leading to the Great Mosque that was built by the last King – Hassan II. The minaret is the tallest building in Morocco at over 200m high, and has space for 25,000 worshippers inside. A glass floor shows the ocean below as the building has been constructed partly over the sea.

Continue travelling on the short way to Rabat. The city of Rabat is the capital of Morocco and has the main government buildings and palaces, but includes ancient areas such as the Chellah, Oudaiyas and the port of Sale (the origin of the “Sallee Rovers” Moroccan pirates in the past that got as far as the UK and Ireland on their raids).

Night in Riad Dar Alia or similar in Rabat.

Day 4 •
Rabat – Meknes – Volubilis - Fes

After breakfast the tour moves onwards to Meknes.

After seeing the medina of this city and the great gates of the city walls, such as Bab Mansour (Bab is Arabic for gates), depart for the Roman City of Volubilis with its magnificent mosaics and columns still well preserved. This Roman city was occupied for over 2 centuries- with the last garrison withdrawing in AD 285. A guided tour will take in the various villas, olive presses, Roman bath houses and the Triumphal Arch. Much of this site is still unexcavated, but what is on show can take a whole afternoon to walk around.

A short journey then takes you to Fes and an overnight in Riad Lalla Fatima or similar B&B.

Day 5 •

After breakfast you will be taken on a morning guided tour of Fes with the afternoon free to explore more of the city.

The souks wind down the hill side, with many little alleyways and small cafes to see and take a welcome cup of tea in. Palaces and madrassa are decorated in Zellige , or small colourful tiles, in vast geometric Islamic designs. Places to visit include the Merenid Tombs dating from the 16 th Century, the Foundouk El Najjarine, a world heritage site, Bou Inania Medersa- a madrassa or school dating from 1350, and the museums of Armes and Dar El-Batha. All of these including the souks and the tanneries mean that you could have a busy day!

Overnight in your Fes hotel.

Day 6 •
Fes – Kenifra - Lac Bin El Oudine

After breakfast travel along the foothills of the High Atlas, visiting Kenifra, with the possibility of seeing the Middle Atlas mountains as they change into the High Atlas. The High Atlas mountains comprise of some of the highest mountains in North Africa (Toubkal is the highest at over 4000m) , while not as high, this journey still gives you a glimpse of Berber life in the mountains and some different scenery to the plains.

Visit the Lake of Bin El Ouidine which is a large lake supplying the plains below with water.

Overnight in Hotel Chems du lac or similar B&B.

Day 7 •
Lac Bin El Oudine – Cascades D’Ouzoud - Marrakech

After breakfast depart along the foothills of the High Atlas mountains with a chance of seeing the Cascades D’Ouzoud waterfalls in the foothills of the mountains. The Cascades D’Ouzoud is a high waterfall with many rivulets of water tumbling over a cliff to the pools below- especially good to visit in hot weather, but at its most scenic with the snow melt of the mountain in April and May.

The last bit of the journey before Marrakech follows the line of the High Atlas and crosses to the plains to Marrakech where you can enjoy some last minute shopping.

Overnight at your Marrakech hotel.
