Mountains and Deserts

8 day / 7 nights tour - Itinerary

Day 1 •

Welcome to Marrakech and Morocco!

Your guide will meet you at the airport and take you to the hotel, where you can settle in.

Rest of your day would be free in Marrakech. Perhaps you can visit the Jamna El Fnaa which is the hub of the old medina or medieval part of the city. At night time the square is lit up with food stalls, street entertainers and story tellers. Alternatively you can take a wander in the new town of Gueliz, along the rose gardens of the Mohamed VI Boulevard, or amongst the upmarket cafes in the Hivernage next to the medina.

Night in the Riad Imilchil, Marrakech or similar.

Day 2 •

After breakfast a morning guided tour of Marrakech - with a chance to see the different souks, madrassa and palaces of the old city. The souks tend to be divided into areas selling the same things, so making it easier to haggle! There are the gold and silver souks, magic souks, spice souks and iron-monger souks, in fact you can just about buy anything somewhere. Start by buying some dried fruit at the entrance to the souks to nibble on while walking…

Outside the souks the medina has beautiful Islamic and Berber architecture in the Bahia palace and the madrassas. We recommend a visit to the tanneries if you have time.

In the afternoon perhaps you could visit the Jardins Majorelle, a vibrant oasis of plants and pools near the medina. A 12 acre botanic garden designed in the 1920’s by the French painter, Majorelle has many different plants including a bamboo and cactus garden which is set off by the bright colours and the water features and pools.

Overnight in your Marrakech hotel.

Optional extra:- for those interested in Moroccan cuisine - we can offer a one day cookery course start by meeting up in the souks at 10am to buy your ingredients and then go back to the kitchens for a lesson on how to prepare a traditional Moroccan dish or two which you can then try out for dinner! (extra charge)

Day 3 •
Morocco – Lake Takerkoust – Plateau du Kik – Asni - Ourigane

After breakfast the journey takes you up to the foothills of the High Atlas mountains to Lake Takerkoust with its cool waters and up to the Plateau du Kik, a lesser visited area, where Berber families are out all times of the year tending to their livestock and fields.

The road climbs steeply up to the top of the plateau and great views can be had over the plains and towards Marrakech.

After descending from the plateau, the road passes Asni in the Toubkal national park and onwards to the scenic valley of Ourigane in the heart of the mountains. Ouirgane is in the centre of the High Atlas and has several Ksars or garden riads with swimming pools to relax by or can be used as a centre for trekking or short walks around the nearby salt pans and Berber villages.

Overnight in Hotel Tatfi, Ourigane or similar B&B

Day 4 •

After breakfast a chance to wander about the verdant village of Ourigane.

Visit the lakeside or take a short walk through the Berber villages that dot the hillsides.

A chance to have a mint tea with a Berber family in their house.

Overnight in your hotel in Ourigane.

Day 5 •
Ourigane – Tizi n Test – Ouled Berhil – Zagora – Berber camp

After breakfast you will leave the valley, pass the Lake and head towards the famous Tizi n Test pass, visiting the Tinmel mosque on the way.

The twisty road descends from the High Atlas to the saffron growing district near Ouled Berhil.

The terrain gets more like a desert here and upon reaching Zagora, the rocky desert or hamada changes into the first sand dunes of the Sahara desert.

Meet the camel team and take a short journey into the desert to the overnight camp in the dunes.

Night and dinner in a Berber camp.

Day 6 •

Maybe get up early to see the sun rise over the dunes before breakfast and meeting the transport and heading up the valley of the Draa, a long oasis stretching from the sahara and has many fields of crops and potatoes dotted about under the date palm trees, to Ouarzazate.

The town of Ouarzazate is a base of many Hollywood films and several huge film sets are dotted around the area.
